This might make you feel old: In 2024, Mayfaire is turning 20.

The mixed-use development on Military Cutoff Road in Wilmington marked the opening of Mayfaire Town Center’s first anchor tenant, department store Hecht’s (now Belk), in March 2004 and its grand opening in May of that year.

To celebrate its 20-year milestone, Mayfaire is holding a yearlong celebration marked by promotions and events.

But 2023 has also been exciting, said Paige Coniglio, Mayfaire’s marketing director.

“We announced the development of The Element Hotel by Westin, Anthropologie opened, The Good Feet Store opened, Coastal Golf Academy opened, Sherwin Williams opened, Pure Barre opened, and Blakeley’s Apparel and Gifts opened,” Coniglio said in a recent email. “We expect that momentum to continue into 2024, and we have a lot of new additions and exciting announcements on the horizon.

“Mayfaire is well-positioned for the future, and we’ve seen demand from new and existing retailers that want to expand and grow with us.”

While timelines could change, the following are expected to open in 2024: Vochos Urban Mexican Kitchen in Mayfaire Community Center; a Harris Teeter Fuel Station, also in the community center; eyeglass store Warby Parker in Mayfaire Town Center; and the expansion of the Reeds Jewelers store at the town center.

Members of the Zimmer family (also of Reeds Jewelers) developed Mayfaire with H.J. Brody of Greenville.

“We’ve certainly been the poster child for coming in and doing mixed-use development under that ordinance,” Brody said in a 2014 Greater Wilmington Business Journal story about Mayfaire’s 10th anniversary. “I hope that with the economic challenges that the counties and the cities face, they continue to hold developers to that high standard because I think you can do something special.”

Tennessee-based CBL & Associates Properties bought Mayfaire in 2015 from the Zimmers and Brody for $192 million.

For Mayfaire’s 20th anniversary, the town center will be adorned with decorations, and a unique QR code will direct visitors to its anniversary website,” Coniglio said. “The website is the hub for all anniversary-related events, exclusive giveaways and exciting promotions and will be updated throughout as new ways to celebrate are added.”

The anniversary site will be accessible from Mayfaire’s homepage via a fifth column going live on Jan. 1, 2024.
