The Power of Accountability

Sponsored Content provided by Mike Barnhart - Founder, Axis Fitness

When was the last time you gave up on a goal for lack of accountability? Accountability is the acceptance of responsibility for one’s own actions. Without accountability, there is no responsibility and without responsibility there is no action. At the end of the day we are ultimately accountable for our own actions, but every now and then we need to lean on others to help hold us accountable to accomplish our goals.

At Axis Fitness and Training we understand that coaching with accountability is an art form, and it is a  responsibility we take very seriously.
Being a coaching company, we understand the functionality of a client-coach relationship. Simply put, our job is tohold people accountable to behaviors that will drive them to accomplishing a goal that is important to them.

It all starts with that goal. People come into our locations with goals such as, “I want to feel stronger”, “I want to change my body composition”, “I want to get faster”, “ I want to have more energy for my family” etc.

From this point on it’s a three step process.

First, our coaches aim to understand the emotional  charge behind the goal. What is this goal going to give you that you don't currently have? Why is accomplishing this goal important? How is achieving this goal going to change your life?

The driving force of any goal is the emotional connection to it. It will lead people through the challenging times when they want to give up. Make no mistake, the motivation may fade before the goal is accomplished. When the motivation fades, all we have left is the why!

Second, we create an action plan that makes sense. This plan requires phases that are logical and progressive. These phases are rooted in the concept of winning the day to win the week. These winning weeks will create winning months and eventually years.

There’s an ancient African proverb that says a lion eats an elephant one bite at a time. While somewhat morbid, this paints the picture that small, patient steps lead to big accomplishments.

Third, we build an understanding with our clients that  accomplishing a goal requires intention and constant action. When things are on track and going well, we celebrate. When things are off track, it is the coach’s goal to step in and make the necessary adjustments. This is a defining moment in a relationship based on trust and accountability.

A coachable client will absorb feedback and follow through on the adjustments needed to get back on track. The client’s “why” is the root of these conversations! A coach's ability to engage in these conversations is what separates the goodfrom the great.

The biggest issue that we fight in our industry is the “I want it now mentality”.

People tend to overestimate what they can do in a day  and underestimate what they can do in a year. As we  approach 2023, our hope is that you create some goals  and have someone there to cheer for you when you’re crushing it but who will also hold you accountable when you're off track. If those goals are in any way fitness related, give Axis Fitness and Training the opportunity to cheer you on while holding you accountable.

Cheers to the New Year.
