UNCW will start the next semester with faculty, staff and students wearing masks indoors, chancellor Jose Sartarelli said in a message Friday.

The fall 2021 semester at the University of North Carolina Wilmington will begin with classes Aug. 18, and move-in is scheduled Aug. 13-14, according to a release.

“As we come together on campus for the fall semester, the safety of our students, faculty and staff is our top priority. Each one of us must do our part to protect and preserve the health and safety of ourselves and others,” Sartarelli said in the message.

UNCW temporarily will require face coverings in indoor settings except when a faculty or staff member is in their office, or a student in their assigned residence hall room.

The rule is based on CDC guidance and because of the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the state.

The requirement will begin Aug. 2 and will be reviewed on or before Sept. 17, depending on circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 virus and its variants, stated the release.

Face coverings are being required while moving through areas such as dining rooms and breakroom, but can be removed to eat or drink, and then replaced while sitting and talking with others. Masks are not required outdoors.

Face coverings also are required on multi-passenger vehicles such as WAVE buses, shuttles, vans and UNCW vehicles, states the release.

“Face coverings will be required during most Move-In activities with the exception of outdoor activities that are not in close proximity to others (for example, if a student, family member or volunteer wants to take a step away from the group to rest),” states the release. “Students, faculty and staff also are expected to wear face coverings during Convocation on Aug. 16.”

Students, faculty and staff may contact the student health center at [email protected] to request free, reusable masks. Classrooms and other areas on campus will also be stocked with free, disposable face coverings.

The university is also encouraging faculty, staff and students to be vaccinated.

Those who wish to get vaccinated are asked to visit the UNCW student health center to learn more about free vaccine availability on campus.
