A community meeting on a townhome development planned in Porters Neck was rescheduled to Thursday.

Greensboro-based The Carroll Companies wants to build 348 units in two- and three-story buildings on about 33.5 acres at 8138 Market St., according to site plans. The land will have to be rezoned by New Hanover County leaders for the project to move forward.

An open-house style community meeting had been set for Aug. 31 but was canceled as a result of Tropical Storm Idalia. The new meeting is expected to be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at Lutheran Church of the Reconciliation, 7500 Market St.

“We are preparing plans for a conditional rezoning request, and, as part of that process, we are holding a community meeting to introduce neighbors to the project and share our vision for the site,” according to a letter by CIP Construction Company Inc., the multifamily division of The Carroll Companies, and Paramounte Engineering Inc.

The Market Street townhome project would span six tracts of land currently zoned for a mix of business, industrial and residential building. A farm, plant nursery and landscape contracting business previously operated on the site, according to the community notice.

The townhome development's amenities and leasing building would be built along the Market Street corridor while the rest of the townhome community would rise in an area surrounded by the existing Porters Pointe, Porters Crossing and Marsh Oaks neighborhoods.

"We feel that townhomes are a great transitional use for this property," wrote Roy Carroll, CEO of The Carroll Companies, in an email for a previous Greater Wilmington Business Journal story on the project.

At Thursday's meeting, "We will have stations set up around our meeting space with members of our development team on-hand to discuss the project and answer questions," the community meeting letter stated.

If Carroll moves forward with the request, a formal rezoning application would go before the New Hanover County Planning Board for review before heading to New Hanover County’s Board of Commissioners for a final vote.
