Health Care Heroes: Unsung Hero

By Staff Reports, posted Oct 20, 2023

Honors anyone working in health care who may not fit in other categories but whose performance is considered exemplary by patients, colleagues and other health care providers.

JOE HILL

Title: Food Services Director

Organization: Dosher Memorial Hospital

What a nominator said: “Joe Hill took over the Dosher Memorial Hospital Dietary Department in the Spring of 2022, and it was an overnight transformation. While Joe has an impressive and longstanding resume in healthcare food service, we were not prepared for half of the improvements he made in such a short amount of time. He quickly got to work, and not only improved the quality of food being served to our patients, the practices and protocols within the kitchen itself but his general presence increased the morale of the Dietary Department almost instantaneously. Our kitchen staff loves coming to work now. … But Joe didn’t just stop at the Dietary Department – with his fun contests, seasonal and holiday décor, the addition of music and personally going around to each department bringing goodies and new little taste-tests to try, Joe Hill has managed to transform the whole hospital into a more patient-centered and joyful environment.”

– Jillian Smith, administrative assistant to the chief nursing officer, Dosher Memorial Hospital

JOSHUA JONES

Title: Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner

Organization: Novant Health NHRMC & Novant Health Primary Care Clinics

What a nominator said: “As a clinical pharmacy practitioner at Novant Health New Hanover Medical Group clinics and hospital, Josh’s exceptional dedication and unwavering commitment to patient care truly set him apart.

“Josh’s impact on patient well-being is immeasurable. His role extends beyond the traditional scope of pharmacy as he goes above and beyond to ensure that patients understand their medications and treatment plans. His compassionate approach and ability to explain complex medical information in a relatable manner make him an invaluable asset ….

“One of Josh’s most remarkable qualities is his determination to make essential medications accessible to all. He tirelessly works to find solutions that allow patients to afford medications that would otherwise be financially out of reach. This not only improves their health outcomes but also relieves a significant burden from their shoulders.”

– Araceli Leon, clinical pharmacy practitioner, Novant Health New Hanover

TAMMY SCOTT

Title: Managed Care Coordinator

Organization: Wilmington Health

What a nominator said: “Tammy Scott has served with Wilmington Health for over a decade, where she has served in clinical support roles, one where she supported the late Dr. Payne in cardiology.”
Currently at Wilmington Health, “she specifically focuses on authorizations for infusions for our patients. This is such a critical position, as it ensures these patients get the care they so desperately need. Tammy does all of this day in and day out, years in and years out, and she does it all while challenged with the daily struggles of her condition of lupus, as well as most recently undergoing chemo/radiation. She has heroic strength and perseveres always.

“As mentioned, Tammy is challenged daily with lupus, and even though she is ... she volunteers. She volunteers at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital and leads a Lupus Support Group at Wilmington Health.

“Tammy showcases how important it is to be a voice, to educate the community, to showcase leadership. …”

– Desirae Hrynko, marketing manager, Wilmington Health
