Avelo Airlines plans to offer nonstop service from Wilmington International Airport to Miami International Airport, according to an announcement Tuesday.

The new ILM seasonal route is set to begin June 6 and will operate Fridays and Saturdays through Aug. 16 using Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft, the release stated.

In December, Avelo announced that it would be establishing a base at ILM, celebrating the launch of the new base in April.

“When we make this a base today, what that means is that the planes that come and go from here will live here, and they will spend the night here,” said Brian Davis, Avelo’s chief commercial officer, on April 2 at an ILM event. “We’ve created about 50 jobs to support those aircraft, and so those jobs are pilots, flight attendants, mechanics and the customer support team.”

Tuesday's news marks the latest announcement about new destinations from ILM offered by the discount airline, which offers base fares as low as $35.

Avelo Airlines founder and CEO Andrew Levy said in the release, “Our ILM base continues to be an exciting platform for growth for Avelo as we add another exciting destination for Coastal North Carolina residents.”

Avelo serves 15 nonstop destinations from ILM: Boston/Manchester, New Hampshire (MHT); Detroit, Mich. (DTW); Houston, Texas (HOU); Nashville, Tennessee (BNA); New Haven, Connecticut (HVN); New York/Long Island (ISP); Philadelphia/Wilmington, Delaware (ILG); Rochester, New York (ROC); Washington, D.C./Baltimore, Maryland (BWI); Washington, D.C.–Dulles (IAD); and five Florida cities: Fort Lauderdale (FLL); Fort Myers (RSW); Miami (MIA); Orlando (MCO); and Tampa (TPA).
