United Airlines will offer nonstop service between Chicago and Wilmington on Saturdays and Sundays this summer, Wilmington International Airport officials said Monday.
The ILM-to-Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) route, which will use Embraer 175 jets, is set to operate between May 25 and Aug. 18, according to an email from the airport Monday.
The flight will depart ORD at 11 a.m. and arrive at ILM at 2:22 p.m. before departing ILM back to ORD at 3:15 p.m., “offering maximum connectivity throughout the Midwest,” the email stated.
United Airlines is one of ILM’s legacy carriers, along with American Airlines and Delta Air Lines. Jeff Bourk, airport director, said in an email, “We’re happy to see United growing at ILM.”
Starting June 5, American Airlines will operate daily service between ILM and Miami International Airport. The airline announced the new nonstop service last summer, with Saturday-only flights operating from November to May.
Jason Reisinger, American Airlines managing director of global network planning, stated in a news release Feb. 6, “American is proud to serve as ILM’s largest carrier and looks forward to offering customers convenient connections to destinations across our comprehensive global network.”
On Friday, the airport announced it received a $4 million grant from the FAA to fund a project to reshape the curb, roads and parking at ILM to accommodate its continued growth, including attracting discount airlines Avelo and Sun Country in recent years.
