OPINION: Create A 100-foot Cape Fear Memorial Bridge

By Gene Merritt, posted Jul 30, 2024
The recent closing of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge for maintenance purposes demonstrates how important it is for us to have a properly functioning crossing. The traffic jams caused by the closing created a very difficult situation. Yes, we need a new bridge across the river. And we need it as soon as possible.

It was very encouraging to hear of the recent $ 242,000,000 federal grant for our bridge. This action should significantly increase the construction activity process. It could cut down on the timeline significantly – I certainly hope this is the case.

I have done a good deal of research on this matter and have discussed this project with several NC DOT representatives. Based on my information, here is my plan, and hopefully yours, for a new bridge:
  • Construct a 100’ vertical span bridge across the Cape Fear River immediately adjacent to the existing bridge. Others have called for another location, but, in my view, and that of DOT, this is the right location. This location will minimize any additional right-of-way acquisition costs and will cause the least amount of traffic problems. 100’ will handle the required river traffic; over 100’ will cause congestion in our historic district.
  • Terminate the bridge at Third Street. Do not, in any manner, do anything that would create traffic problems for our residential historic district.
  • Design an attractive bridge, hopefully like the Ravenel Bridge in Charleston. Hopefully, the bridge will be lighted.
  • Unless there Is absolutely no alternative, do not use a toll to finance the project.
If you agree with my plan, please contact your local, state, and federal elected officials.
