OPINION: Supporting Improvements To The Eastwood-Military Cutoff Intersection With Compassion, Commitment

On behalf of the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, I am proud to support NCDOT’s TIP Project U-5710, an essential infrastructure upgrade that will transform the intersection of Eastwood Road and Military Cutoff Road into a safer, more efficient interchange. This project is a vital step toward ensuring Wilmington’s long-term mobility, safety, and economic prosperity.

While some may believe the project is unnecessary now due to other investments in the area, it is my understanding that these projects have been planned with all the other recently completed projects in mind. Together, these investments will provide a path of progress needed for our future success.

But progress must never come at the expense of compassion for others.

We recognize that construction projects of this magnitude bring real challenges for nearby property owners and businesses. Temporary disruptions, changes in traffic patterns and reduced visibility can create uncertainty and hardship. These are not just buildings and storefronts, they are the livelihoods of our neighbors, the heart of our local economy and the places where our community gathers.

To those affected: we see you, we hear you, and we are with you.

As I reported to the members of the Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization at their May meeting, the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce is committed to standing by our local businesses during the construction. We will:
  • launch public awareness messaging, in cooperation with the business owners, to remind residents and visitors that businesses in the construction zone remain open and ready to serve;
  • provide clear, up-to-date information on the best routes and access points to help customers reach their favorite shops, restaurants and services;
  • and collaborate with NCDOT and local officials to ensure signage, communication, and mitigation efforts are responsive to business needs.

Once completed, this project will deliver lasting benefits: reduced congestion, improved safety, and enhanced connectivity for all who live, work and visit Wilmington. It will strengthen our infrastructure and position our city for sustainable growth.

But we know that the road to progress must be paved with empathy, transparency and partnership.

Together, we can ensure that this project not only builds a better intersection—but also builds a stronger, more united Wilmington.
