Leland is about to get a little sweeter. The town that has seen momentous growth of people and retail options over the past several years is getting a welcome treat with the anticipated opening of Milly’s Ice Cream Shop in Waterford Village.
For owner Liz Iannacone, the opening is close to her heart.
“We always would have to take our kids into Wilmington if we wanted ice cream, and living in Leland, my husband and I just felt a little ice cream shop here would be nice for our kids as well as the community,” Iannacone said.
Originally from the Jersey Shore, Iannacone said growing up, there was some sort of ice cream eatery on every corner. She said she was surprised when her family moved to Leland last year to find nothing close by. It wasn’t long before Iannacone said she became excited about the possibility of opening an ice cream shop for the Leland area.
“We decided to say a prayer and take that leap of faith,” she said.
What came from that leap is a full-service ice cream parlor. Iannacone said the store offers much more than just ice cream; she hopes it will become a community centerpiece for children as well as families looking for a sweet treat fix.
Current plans include monthly events such as coloring contests that will allow ice cream enthusiasts to get involved at Milly’s.
In a Sept. 26 Facebook post, Milly's Ice Cream Shop shared it planned to open this week. The shop is located next to Five Guys on Olde Regent Way.
The shop offers 26 flavors served in cups and cones with plenty of toppings available, shakes, ice cream sandwiches, sundaes, root beer floats, soft serve and hand-packed containers to-go. Dairy-free flavors are also available.
Iannacone said all the typical ice cream sides will be on the menu including brownie cookies and chocolate sprinkles.
Owners had initially hoped to be in business in June, but construction and equipment backorders set the opening day back.
“We wanted something for Leland for our kids and the community, but we also just want to make it a fun place to come and have some family time,” she said.
