More Than 100 Recipients Named In Inaugural Endowment Grant Cycle

The New Hanover Community Endowment publicly announced recipients Friday afternoon of its inaugural funding cycle, the 2022 Cape Fear Opportunities and Needs Grants.
 
A total of 110 community organizations are slated to receive a combined $9,055,050. (Note: View a full list of recipients at the bottom of this article.)
 
Endowment officials reviewed nearly 300 grant proposals garnered during the application window in September. 
 
Grant recipients include representatives from a wide range of community organizations in the area’s nonprofit sector and public agencies. 
 
“We hope that this marks the beginning of a long legacy of partnership between our organization, the endowment, and each of you – financially and otherwise,” endowment president and CEO William Buster said Friday at an event announcing the awardees. “We are here for you as capacity builders, advocates, a resource, a link, convener and a relationship-builder. Use us as you can.”
 
The nonrecurring awards are intended to address the endowment’s four buckets of community initiatives, established in 2020 by New Hanover County: community safety; health and social equity; education; and community development. 
 
Each awardee was required to have physical office space in New Hanover County, have been in operation for at least two years and provide services in the county. Awards couldn’t exceed 25% of an organization's operating budget or $250,000, whichever is less.  
 
When first opening the grant cycle, Buster said the group’s focus would be on smaller, grassroots organizations.  
 
Incoming board chair Bill Cameron said the endowment’s role is to make existing organizations stronger and more effective. “My hope is nonprofits that received grants in this cycle are now better equipped to achieve transformational change within their individual spheres of influence in our community,” he said. 
 
Formed by the sale of the once-public New Hanover Regional Medical Center to Novant Health, which closed in February 2021, the endowment was bestowed $1.25 billion in hospital sale proceeds. Though that total dipped to about $1.1 billion as of this fall due to unfavorable market conditions, the endowment is now considered the area’s largest charitable organization. 
 
Each year, the endowment intends to administer funds via two grant cycles. It can disperse up to 4% of its total market value annually, per bylaws instituted by New Hanover County officials during the sale of the hospital.  
 
“This is just the beginning,” Buster said Friday.
