Two convenience store chains have plans to add locations in New Hanover County.

A new Sheetz is in the works along a southern stretch of Carolina Beach Road, while a RaceWay-branded gas station and convenience store is planned off U.S. 421. The locations are the latest instances of convenience store and gas station chains set to grow in the Cape Fear region in recent years.

Plans for both stores will be considered by New Hanover County’s technical review committee early next month. Several gas station brands, including Wawa, Sheetz, 7-Eleven and Royal Farms, have announced expansions into the Wilmington market in recent years.

The Sheetz, which will include a 6,100-square-foot convenience store with fuel pumps, a restaurant and drive-thru, is planned for a roughly 2.3-acre tract at the corner of Carolina Beach and South Seabreeze roads, site plans show.

The Pennsylvania-based chain opened its first local store in Hampstead last July, and a few weeks later, Sheetz opened a second location on Shipyard Boulevard. The chain is also working on another location at 6401 Carolina Beach Road, a few miles north of the latest proposal.

On U.S. 421, Atlanta-based RaceTrac Inc. has submitted plans for a RaceWay Market convenience store and gas station. The project is proposed for a 4.5-acre tract just north of the intersection of U.S. 421 and Interstate 140. Site plans show a 3,500-square-foot RaceWay Market convenience store with eight fuel pumps.

RaceTrac Inc. operates convenience stores and gas stations under the RaceTrac and RaceWay brands throughout the South. In recent years, the chain has expanded its footprint into North Carolina with its first locations.
