Yousry Sayed and Michael Lee will be joining the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Board of Trustees, according to a news release Thursday.

Sayed, founder of Wilmington-based Quality Chemical Laboratories and former UNCW administrator, and Lee, who is a Wilmington attorney, former state senator and former UNCW student, will both serve terms through 2023.

“Mr. Lee and Dr. Sayed will be outstanding additions to our Board of Trustees,” Chancellor Jose Sartarelli said in the news release. “Their roles as dedicated public servants set a terrific example for our students in terms of being actively engaged in the community. I look forward to working with them, and the rest of our stellar board, to achieve our collective goals as outlined in UNCW’s Strategic Plan.”

The university received its largest corporate donation in its history of $5 million from Quality Chemical Laboratories, Sayed and his wife, Linda Sayed, in 2017 to support new pharmaceutical sciences and chemistry programs. The donation will be in the form of $1 million over five years.

Last year, UNCW received its largest outright gift of $10 million from David Congdon, executive chairman of the board of Old Dominion Freight Line, and his wife, Helen.

UNCW's Board of Trustees welcomed Sayed and Lee on Thursday. The board also held a workshop on House Bill 389, a bill signed by Gov. Roy Cooper that allows colleges and universities to sell alcohol at stadiums, athletic facilities and arenas on school property.
