Alcami, a pharmaceutical developer with a presence in Wilmington, expanded its reach to the western U.S. through an acquisition announced this week.

The contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) acquired Nevada-based Pacific Pharmaceutical Services Inc. (PPS), a provider of current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) services for the pharma industry. PPS founder Scott Chadwick will stay on with a general manager and site head role, according to Alcami officials on Wednesday.

The companies did not disclose the financial details of the deal.

PPS provides controlled storage and material management, such as controlled temperature storage from room to cryo temperatures. The firm also gathers information on products in pre-clinical and early clinical trial stages of development.

Chadwick said in a release that he looks forward to a partnership with Alcami. The combination of the two businesses will allow for a broader range of customer offerings, he said.

Alcami will provide its services to PPS’s client base, expanding its business from the East Coast to the west. PPS’s clients will get immediate access to Alcami’s range of services, including development, testing and manufacturing, according to Alcami officials. Alcami’s current client base will also gain access to PPS’s pharma storage facility.

Officials made the deal to “improve material safe-guarding from natural disasters with multi-location facilities,” among other service advantages of being in the country’s eastern and western portions, Alcami CEO William Humphries said in a release.

In addition to the storage expansion through PPS, Alcami officials reported the company is expanding its central North Carolina storage presence with a 65,000-square-foot facility in Garner. In November, Humphries spoke to the Business Journal about the Garner facility’s development.

Humphries said the facility can store about 3,500 pallets of product, with different areas for temperature-controlled storage. It will also serve as a stability facility for companies testing the shelf life of different drugs, he said.

Alcami is intentionally expanding its storage capabilities through the PPS acquisition and the purchase of a Massachusetts-based cGMP storage company in 2021.

“What happens is, companies, when they have their planning for growing their buildings and putting them up, they generally at the end are over budget, and so they cut warehousing and storage space,” Humpries said, as to why pharma storage is a growing focus for Alcami. “They just want to get to the end of the rainbow, and so that’s where we come in.”
