Join the Team That Keeps Things Flowing in Wilmington

Sponsored Content provided by Jennifer Adams - Chairwoman, Cape Fear Public Utility Authority

Providing water and sewer service to 200,000 people with a staff of 350 – it’s no small feat.

Keeping up with Wilmington’s utility needs requires one of the most diverse skilled workforces in the region. Our staff includes water operators and laboratory technicians, customer service advocates and accountants, IT specialists and electricians.

Just like the community we serve, CFPUA is growing. When you pursue a career with CFPUA, you’ll also be working at a place that is committed to helping you grow.

Take, for instance, Water Treatment Operator Vatrice Robinson, who joined CFPUA in 2017. When Vatrice applied for a Water Process Operator position, she had a background in manufacturing but no prior water treatment experience. A long-time Wilmington resident looking for a job serving her community, and an Army veteran who is no stranger to hard work, Vatrice was a perfect fit for our team.

Today, she’s a Water Treatment Operator helping run CFPUA’s state-of-the-art Sweeney Water Treatment Plant. With CFPUA’s support, Vatrice has obtained six different State certifications for water and wastewater treatment and is preparing to test for a seventh.

The average CFPUA customer likely does not know just how many types of professionals work every day to keep our community’s taps running. For applicants, this means CFPUA has job opportunities to meet candidates where they are – from entry-level to experienced professional.

Do you have a high school diploma and are looking for work that gets you out of the office? Consider working for CFPUA as a Camera Assistant, Industrial Electrician, or Utility Maintenance Mechanic.

Have a science degree and a passion for clean water? You may be a perfect fit for our in-house Laboratory.

A common misconception about CFPUA is that we are a private company. In fact, we are a special unit of local government, meaning our staff receives North Carolina’s excellent state employee benefits, including health coverage through State Health Plan of North Carolina.
CFPUA employees also are eligible for pensions through North Carolina Retirement System for Local Government, which they can also supplement with a 401(k), 457(b), Roth 401(k), and/or Roth 457(b).

A detailed summary of all our benefits – from dental and vision to flex spending accounts and the Employee Assistance Program – is available on our website.

CFPUA also has a tuition assistance program for team members who want to continue their education. Last fiscal year we hired our first Workforce Development Manager, a position focused entirely on helping employees grow as professionals and chart a course to their ultimate career goals.

Every staff member at CFPUA has a hand in providing critical services to Wilmington and New Hanover County. Whether in the field, at the lab, or in a treatment plant, choosing a career with CFPUA means supporting our community’s quality of life.
