Drive-thru Greek Festival Returns

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Wilmington will hold another drive-thru edition of its Greek Festival this weekend.

Organizer and promotional director Basile Katsikis said the first edition of the drive-thru festival last October was so successful that there was no doubt they should host a second festival in the spring.

“Converting the festival to a drive-thru was a huge undertaking that involved a lot of trust and logistics,” Katsikis said. “But we are fortunate to have volunteers from so many different backgrounds, each of whom brought something to the table to help create a plan that would be as efficient as possible.”

Katsikis said that while things went as well as could be expected, there is always something to be learned and improved upon, so organizers are making some minor changes to the menu and logistics to make this second festival even more successful.

“We had nearly 5,000 cars come through in two and a half days,” Katsikis said. “The last thing we wanted was traffic spilling out onto South College Road, so we’re working to be able to corral more cars behind the church this time to prevent that. We want to get people in and out as fast as possible and not cause any delays out on the road.”

The church is at 608 S. College Road.

Katsikis said the majority of the food was sold out by Sunday afternoon last year, so organizers are making some adjustments to accommodate even more diners.

They also weren’t sure how big of a seller the lamb would be the first time around, but it sold out within a few hours, so they’ll be sure to have more lamb available this weekend.

“I’m really proud to be part of this and have to give a huge thank you to all the cooks that are working so hard to prepare all the food and pastries,” Katsikis said.

As it did last October, St. Nicholas plans to donate a portion of the sales from the event to local charitable partners Good Shepherd Center and First Fruit Ministries.

“You have to give back to the community that supports you,” Katsikis said. “Both of these organizations have done so much for the community and we’re glad to help in any way we can.”

This weekend’s festival kicks off Friday at 11 a.m. and runs through 8 p.m. Saturday hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
