As part of the Coastal Entrepreneur Awards program, area chambers of commerce share their top picks.

Burgaw Area Chamber Of Commerce: JUNIOR’S DELI

Vincent Mangual, a Brooklyn-born chef with over 30 years of experience, is the owner of Junior’s Deli in Burgaw.

“At Junior’s Deli, I take pride in doing things the right way – fresh ingredients, fresh-baked bread, meats smoked in-house, and all our dressings and sauces made from scratch,” he said. “My goal is simple: support local farms, create local jobs and serve real food to the community.”

Greater Topsail Area Chamber Of Commerce & Tourism: TOPSAIL ISLAND TRADING COMPANY

“Topsail Island Trading Company, located in Surf City, is a popular, locally owned gift shop renowned for its massive selection of over 150+ flavors of fresh, homemade fudge. Open since 1992, it offers quality souvenirs, jewelry, apparel and home decor, serving as a staple shopping stop for visitors.”

Greater Wilmington Chamber Of Commerce: CAPT’N BILL'S BACKYARD GRILL

“Capt’n Bill’s Backyard Grill started in 1992 as a bar and grill with four volleyball courts. John and Erin Musser continued to grow the business over the years, adding more volleyball courts, cabanas and a tiki bar. The family expanded their vision by launching a full-scale brewery and taproom, opening Bill’s Brewing Company in 2016 and The Warehouse in 2017. The Musser family continues to operate this diverse group of businesses as its second generation of owners, including their daughter Brookes, helps run everyday operations.”

North Brunswick Chamber Of Commerce: JBG PAINTING

“JBG Painting, owned by Jeremy and Billie Gunn, serves New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties with high-quality residential and commercial painting services. Their offerings include interior and exterior painting, cabinet painting, popcorn ceiling removal, historic home restoration, wallpaper removal, deck and wood staining and color consultations. They are fully bonded and insured, employ W-2 team members and use only premium paints. Free estimates are available.”

Pleasure Island Chamber Of Commerce: TONY SILVAGNI SURF SCHOOL & BEACH RENTALS

“Tony Silvagni is a lifelong professional longboard surfer and respected entrepreneur who has shaped the Carolina Beach community for nearly three decades. In 2008, he founded Tony Silvagni Surf School, building it into a thriving coastal business that now includes a full-service beach rental operation serving visitors from Carolina Beach down to Fort Fisher. ... He continues to compete at the highest level, earning a spot on Team USA and helping secure a silver medal at the 2025 ISA World Longboard Championship.”

Southport-Oak Island Chamber Of Commerce: DOODLES MARKET & CONVENIENCE

“Doodles Market & Convenience is a true example of exceptional customer service and community connection. Through significant challenges, including a year-long bridge closure and the impacts of COVID-19, the Kinlaws revitalized the business with strong leadership, engaged staff and a deep commitment to their customers. From the creation of a 20-foot Veterans Wall, inspired by Philip’s service as a Navy submarine veteran, to Claus Calls, a holiday initiative supporting families in need, Doodles continues to go above and beyond.”

Wilmington Minority Chamber Of Commerce: REE’S SOCIAL

“Aretha Session, owner of Ree’s Social LLC, is the definition of purpose-driven entrepreneurship. She has built her business on a powerful mission – using every dollar earned to uplift her community. Through her annual Mother’s Day and Father’s Day dinners, Aretha creates meaningful experiences that honor parents and bring families together. Each year, she provides over 150 pairs of sneakers and bookbags to students, helping them start the school year with confidence. During Halloween, she has given away more than 500 costumes to underprivileged youth, ensuring every child can experience joy. Her impact doesn’t stop there – Aretha feeds the unhoused weekly, offering both nourishment and compassion. Her work proves that true success is measured not by profit, but by the lives you change.”
