A new machine at Delaney Radiology marks the first of its kind in Wilmington, according to a news release.

In the fall of 2024, Delaney Radiology began construction on a new fixed MRI suite to house a wide-bore 3T unit at its main office on Medical Center Drive. Delaney’s first fixed MRI unit began scanning patients in February. The “T” refers to the unit of magnetic field strength known as the tesla.

“The new machine marks the first 3T MRI in Wilmington and the surrounding area. This technology allows Delaney Radiology to accommodate a broader range of patients and exams, giving more options to referring physicians at no additional cost to patients,” according to the release.

While 1.5T remains the standard of care for most of the population, 3T MRI “provides better imaging for certain smaller body parts, offering higher resolution and more detailed images – for example, prostate imaging, rectal cancer staging, as well as a number of orthopedic and neurological studies enhanced by 3T technology,” the release stated.

L. Neal Beard Jr., managing partner, stated in the release, “As a privately owned radiology practice, our group is excited to be the first to offer 3T MRI technology to the community. Patients can now be seen locally instead of having to drive hours away, when 3T imaging is indicated.”
