Pine Valley Market Opens 2nd Location

Pine Valley Market has expanded its reach to the Wrightsville Beach area by opening another location in the former Sweet n Savory building at 1611 Pavilion Place.

After celebrating a grand opening at the Pavilion Place location in early November, Pine Valley Market chef and co-owner Christi Ferretti said she is excited to provide customers with more catering, bar and full-service restaurant options.

“The space has always been an iconic space and Sweet n Savory an iconic restaurant,” Ferretti said. “My partners all rolled their eyes when we first mentioned it, but curiosity killed the cat, and we were reenergized by how big the kitchen is.”

Sweet n Savory closed its doors in February after filing for bankruptcy.

Ferretti and her wife, Kathy Webb, have owned Pine Valley Market on South College Road since 2003, with partners Matt and Christyanna Durand joining them in 2022.

The new, larger Pine Valley Market location on Pavilion Place, off Eastwood Road, empowers the market to offer a full-service restaurant in a way that it cannot at the 3520 S. College Road building, Ferretti said.

“While the other location is just a casual, walk-up counter where we holler your name,” Ferretti said, “this will be a full-service restaurant and bar serving breakfast and lunch.”

The larger building has also enabled an expansion of their retail space into a “mini grocery store,” according to Ferretti. One-third of the space is dedicated to offering an array of local and regional products, as well as a large freezer with prepared foods.

The larger kitchen will allow for greater production of freezer meals, with a new conveyor belt system in place that enables Pine Valley Market to package 25 meals a minute. All larger platters and holiday meals, as well as catering orders, will continue to be fulfilled in the kitchen on South College Road.

Another new opportunity that the new space will offer includes the chance to host small events. Customers can take advantage of the larger location to celebrate their special occasions there.

“Since we are not open for dinner, customers can rent the space for small groups, which is exciting since we have never been able to do that before,” Ferretti said.

The beloved lunch items of the South College Road location will carry over to the new spot.

Ferretti said the Pavilion Place location is adding breakfast, including sausage gravy and biscuits, fried chicken sandwiches, pimento cheese and hot honey biscuits. All egg orders will include “fresh-cracked real eggs for every order, every omelet.”

“We will offer North Carolina sausage links and country ham as much as we can. It makes such a difference, and it is so much better,” Ferretti said. “All our pancakes, biscuits and sticky buns are made from scratch.”

“The good, hearty, solid breakfast” is available weekdays from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and all day on weekends starting at 7:30 a.m., Ferretti said, and she plans to switch to a brunch menu at some point soon on weekends.

Once they “get on their feet,” Ferretti said that to-go orders will be part of their rotation at the Pavilion Place location, and they will be available through a link on the restaurant’s website once they are ready.

Another aspect of the new restaurant that Ferretti is most excited about is its full-service bar, which will be open until 6 p.m. each day. Appetizers on the bar menu are forthcoming, and in the meantime, Ferretti suggests grabbing some pretzels from the market, then sitting by the bar for a snack and a drink.

“It gives people the chance to stop after work to grab something to bring home for dinner and take a minute to sit and have a drink,” Ferretti said.

The best part of the expansion, Ferretti said, is getting to see the people they cater to.

“We have a ton of clients on this side of town that we rarely get to see on a regular basis, and now we can. It is so nice to see new and familiar faces again,” Ferretti said.

Pine Valley Market’s newest location is open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays through Friday, with the retail portion and bar open until 6 p.m. those days. It’s also open 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, but the market on Pavilion Place is closed on Tuesdays.

Another perk of the expansion is the hope for its longevity and potential continuity, Ferretti said.

“This is a chance for the business to outlast me. We reached max capacity at College Road,” she said, “but this makes 23 years of hard work worth it. All of our kids work there, so it is fun to see the next generation taking ownership.”
