A Life in Music: Naomi Amos Inspires Through Every Note

Sponsored Content provided by Lisa Polanski - Marketing Director, Porters Neck Village

For Naomi Amos, music has never been just a career—it’s been a lifelong way of connecting, teaching, and telling stories. With degrees from the University of Rochester and the renowned Eastman School of Music, her path has taken her from university classrooms to concert halls, always guided by a passion for making music meaningful and accessible.

Throughout her career, Amos has taught at Wesleyan University and Trinity College and later at the University of Lynchburg’s Westover Honors College. Her signature lecture-recitals—blending history, insight, and live performance—have been presented at universities across the country, exploring everything from the genius of George and Ira Gershwin to the cultural rhythms of the Depression era.

She has also been a dedicated collaborator and performer, coaching and accompanying numerous operas and appearing in chamber ensembles. Her work continues today as an accompanist for Temple of Israel’s High Holy Days services, as well as other occasional services throughout the year.

Since making Wilmington home, Amos has found new ways to share her gift. In addition to teaching courses through UNCW’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), she welcomes students into her home studio, where the sound of piano fills the room as she works one-on-one with learners of all ages—especially children— passing along not just technique, but a genuine love of music.

At Porters Neck Village, she remains a vibrant presence, offering lectures, performances, and special programs that bring neighbors together through shared musical experiences. Outside of music, Amos enjoys reading, film, and thoughtful conversations about the world around her. She is a devoted mother and grandmother, and at her core, she remains what she has always been: a teacher—one who continues to inspire and make a difference, one note at a time.
