Survey Seeks Insight From Local Nonprofits

By Staff Reports, posted Jun 3, 2026
Local organizations are seeking input from area nonprofits on the state of the nonprofit sector in New Hanover County, according to a news release.

Cape Fear Collective, UNCW’s QENO (Quality Enhancement for Nonprofit Organizations) and the Landfall Foundation have opened an online survey examining funding, workforce and the conditions shaping local nonprofits, the release stated.

Responses will inform a public report designed to help funders, policymakers and nonprofit leaders make strategic decisions and advocate for the sector, according to the release.

The State of Nonprofits survey, open through June 17, "is the first sector-wide effort to ask New Hanover County’s nonprofits directly: How financially stable are local organizations? Where is demand outpacing what nonprofits can deliver? What’s straining the nonprofit workforce? And where does the community see service gaps? Survey responses will be combined with IRS Form 990 data and listening sessions to produce the county’s first integrated picture of sector operating conditions," according to the release.

Officials said the results are expected to be shared publicly in January 2027.

“Too often, funders and policymakers make critical decisions about the nonprofit sector without a clear understanding of their challenges," said Denise Baer, president of the Landfall Foundation, in the release. "This survey will give nonprofits a direct voice, helping us build an accurate picture of their needs so we can better support them and our community.”

According to the release, the survey is open to any staff member at a New Hanover County 501(c)(3) and takes 10 to 15 minutes to complete. Multiple responses per organization are welcome, the release stated. The survey can be taken through this link.
